Documenting your OYOO Story

A big part of the OYOO challenge is sharing our stories with each other and with the broader community.

Telling the story highlights the work involved in making our clothing and will hopefully generate some critical thinking within our fibreshed about the resources and impact of our textile industry.

We would like to put together a photo collage of all our participants and all the projects. We would like everyone to send us a photo for the collage (you do not need to submit one if you prefer to stay anonymous). We will create a collage of all the participants at the beginning and a similar collage at the end of the challenge with our finished garments.

Please send these photos as a jpeg image (we can resize them).

Telling your Story:

  • Photos from your smart phone or digital camera are great, they don't have to be perfect or staged photos, just make sure you take the photos.

  • Take photos of every stage of your project (here are some examples)

    • picture of your sketch book with your design ideas

    • picture of your 'inspiration' (manitoba landscape, fashion photos, or whatever you have used to inspire your design ideas)

    • picture of the source of your materials (a sheep, a flax field, a monarch on milkweed, goldenrod (dye plant)

    • process pictures: raw wool next to a drop spindle or spinning wheel. Tanning a hide or skin. Picking dye plants, soapy hands making felt (whatever you are doing take a photo of it).

  • Don't overthink the captions. They can be as simple as just explaining what you are doing. Or you can add more analysis of how difficult or easy that step of the project as been

  • Share the struggles – if you have run into a particular challenge (can't find processing tools, hail destroys your dye plants, breaking needles while sewing a hide, etc). Tell that part of the story as well: this humanizes our shared experiences.

The 'stories' function on instagram and facebook allow us to put together little videos about our processes. They can be as short as 15seconds long and are a great way to show the process.

If you do not use social media then save these photos with small captions and email them to us at connect@pembinafibreshed.com and we will put them up on our social media accounts.

Here are some hashtags you can use on social media posts so we can find them and repost:
